From Overwhelm to Grounded: How to Reset Your Nervous System When Everything Feels Like Too Much

You know that feeling. Your shoulders are up by your ears. Your jaw is clenched. You’re exhausted but can’t sleep. Your mind won’t stop racing. Even small things feel overwhelming.

You’re not broken. Your nervous system is stuck in overdrive and it’s affecting everything from your sleep to your pain levels to your ability to just get through the day.

Here’s what most women don’t know: you can reset your nervous system. And when you do, everything changes.

Why Your Nervous System Gets Stuck in Overwhelm

Your nervous system has two modes:

  • Sympathetic (Fight or Flight): Alert, activated, ready for danger
  • Parasympathetic (Rest and Digest): Calm, grounded, able to heal

When you’re dealing with chronic stress, work deadlines, family responsibilities, health concerns, hormonal changes in midlife. Your nervous system gets stuck in sympathetic overdrive. It thinks you’re constantly in danger, even when you’re just trying to sleep or relax.

This chronic activation leads to: • Sleep problems and exhaustion • Chronic muscle tension and pain • Anxiety and racing thoughts • Digestive issues • Difficulty recovering from exercise or injury • Feeling “wired and tired” all the time • Hormonal imbalances • Immune system struggles

Your body can’t heal when it’s constantly in survival mode. You need to shift back into parasympathetic and into that grounded, calm state where actual recovery happens.

The Problem with “Just Relax”

Everyone tells you to relax. Take a bath. Do some deep breathing. Practice self-care.

But here’s the truth: when your nervous system is truly dysregulated, you can’t just think your way out of it.

Your body is stuck in a pattern. Telling yourself to calm down doesn’t work because the dysregulation is physical, not just mental. You need somatic approaches and techniques that work directly with your body to release the stuck patterns.

That’s where Athletic Therapy combined with somatic practices comes in.

How Athletic Therapy Helps Reset Your Nervous System

As an Athletic Therapist specializing in nervous system regulation, I work with women in Port Coquitlam and Burnaby who are stuck in chronic overwhelm. Here’s how we address it:

Manual Therapy for Nervous System Regulation

Specific hands-on techniques can literally shift your nervous system out of fight-or-flight mode:

Bowen Therapy for Nervous System Reset Gentle, precise moves on specific points signal your body that it’s safe to relax. Bowen works directly with your autonomic nervous system, helping shift you from sympathetic to parasympathetic activation. Many women fall asleep during sessions—that’s your body finally feeling safe enough to let go.

Lymphatic Flow Techniques When your nervous system is overwhelmed, your lymphatic system (which clears inflammation and toxins) slows down. Manual therapy that supports lymph flow helps reduce the physical inflammation contributing to pain and fatigue.

Neck Reset Your neck holds massive tension when you’re stressed—and it’s directly connected to your vagus nerve, the main pathway of your parasympathetic nervous system. Releasing neck tension can have an immediate calming effect on your entire system.

Thyroid Support For women in midlife especially, thyroid function and nervous system regulation are deeply connected. Specific techniques can support better thyroid function, which impacts energy, mood, and stress response.

Somatic Grounding Practices

Beyond manual therapy, somatic practices teach your body how to self-regulate:

Grounding Movement Not exercise for fitness, movement specifically designed to help you feel present in your body and connected to the ground beneath you. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system naturally.

Breathwork and Meditation When taught properly (not just “breathe deeply”), these practices give you tools to shift your nervous system state in real-time.

Journaling for Release Getting thoughts and emotions out of your head and onto paper is a somatic practice that helps your nervous system process and release what it’s holding.

What Happens When Your Nervous System Resets

When you shift out of chronic overwhelm and into a more regulated state, you notice:

✨ Better Sleep – You can actually fall asleep and stay asleep ✨ Less Pain – Chronic muscle tension releases when you’re not constantly activated ✨ More Energy – Your body stops burning through resources in survival mode ✨ Clearer Thinking – Brain fog lifts when your nervous system calms ✨ Emotional Regulation – You don’t feel overwhelmed by small things ✨ Better Recovery – Your body can actually heal from exercise, injury, or illness ✨ Hormonal Balance – Stress hormones regulate, supporting better overall hormone function

You feel like yourself again. Grounded. Capable. Calm.

Tools You Can Use Right Now

While working with a practitioner is the most effective way to reset a chronically dysregulated nervous system, here are some things you can try today:

1. Grounding Through Your Feet Stand barefoot and feel your feet on the ground. Rock gently forward and back, side to side. Notice the sensation of support beneath you. This simple practice activates your parasympathetic nervous system.

2. Exhale Longer Than You Inhale Breathe in for 4 counts, out for 6-8 counts. The longer exhale signals safety to your nervous system.

3. Gentle Neck Releases Slowly tilt your head to one side, hold for 30 seconds, then the other. Drop your chin to your chest gently. These movements release vagus nerve tension.

4. Cool Water on Your Face Splash cool (not cold) water on your face. This activates the mammalian dive reflex, which calms your nervous system.

5. Humming or Singing The vibration stimulates your vagus nerve. Even just humming while you exhale helps.

These are starting points, but if you’re dealing with chronic overwhelm, you need deeper work.
